#030: Siul Hughes' records are photo-albums that capture segments of life
Friday Nov 20, 2020
Friday Nov 20, 2020
This episode is a longform conversation with the New Haven by-way-of Bridgeport emcee Siul Hughes. Hughes just released an album this year called "HUEMAN" on the record label Fake Four Inc, and we've been spinning it ever since it came out. And he has a new collaborative 7" split with Ceschi called "DRKWLKR"; we talked about that a little bit in our recent podcast episode with Ceschi -- you may remember Siul Hughes came up quite a bit in that interview too. You can find his music on bandcamp, spotify, and anywhere else you get your music. You can also get some great merch from his personal website at seallhues.com. That's spelled like "see" "all" "hues" .com. You can get a face mask, a phone case, and more. We had a great conversation about HUEMAN, what makes music "genuine", and how each record he makes is a photo-album of his life. It's probably the most deep we've gotten on this podcast, but don't worry, we got jokes too. One quick warning before we get into it, my microphone was turned a bit low in this one, so you may notice that at first. https://www.seeallhues.com/ https://fakefour.bandcamp.com/album/hueman https://www.ctverses.com/

#028: Olive Tiger's String-Forward Folktronic Indie Rock
Monday Nov 02, 2020
Monday Nov 02, 2020
This episode we talk with Olive Tiger, the New Haven trio and one of ct verses's all-time-faves. The song you heard in the intro is "The Boys", their brand new single that came out last week, and the first peek from their upcoming EP. We talked about their new music, playing live with Dirty Projectors, and their best and worst Halloween costumes. The phrase "Edgar Allen Ho" appears more than once in this episode. You can find Olive Tiger's music everywhere, but if you can, buy their stuff on Bandcamp. Be sure to follow them on social media so that you can get info about their new EPs and other special events. For example, last week, they streamed a beautiful live session on Twitch with the label Fake Four, and before then, they were broadcasting these super cool music meditation improvisations. Follow them so that you don't miss out on stuff like that! https://www.olivetiger.net https://olivetiger.bandcamp.com/ https://www.ctverses.com

#027: Youth XL defends their title as "Connecticut's Funnest Band"
Friday Oct 16, 2020
Friday Oct 16, 2020
photo/art credit: @rustyflipflop In this episode, we talk with Youth XL -- the new band from New Haven. The band's debut ep will come out on October 30th, so we asked them a bunch of silly questions about it. You may know the singer, Alex McGuire, who used to release music under his own name. In this conversation, I sat with all four studs from Youth XL, and we talked about their beginnings, what a Youth XL meal at McDonalds would be like, and what makes them "Connecticut's Funnest Band". Oh, and I will let you in on a little secret. At the end of the podcast, I pit the members against one another in a music trivia deathmatch for the ages, but they have no idea what they're in for. You can find YouthXL's music on spotify, and you can catch the delightful video for "Text Your Friends" on youtube or at participating movie theaters. The CTverses podcast is available everywhere you get your dang podcasts. https://youthxl.bandcamp.com/ https://www.ctverses.com

#026: Ceschi on his new music, live shows, and the eulogy of youth
Friday Oct 02, 2020
Friday Oct 02, 2020
photo credit: @digitalcypher (digital cypher productions). in this very special episode, we talk to the recording artist and Fake Four label head Ceschi. to let you behind the curtain for this episode, it has two parts: the part you are about to hear was recorded just a day ago, and the second half was recorded back in mid-March. back in March, we talked with Ceschi about a live show that was scheduled at the State House in New Haven, and because of coronavirus, it was indefinitely postponed. but if you are like me and have missed Ceschi's live shows in the past few months, he is playing a show this Saturday, October 3 [2020] at 2PM at The Klein in Bridgeport. The bill is stacked, with Ceschi, Phat Astronaut, Mandala, and The Hooch playing, and it's safe and outdoors too -- there's a very limited number of tickets for spacing reasons. So you should probably go online right now to theklein.org to grab your ticket before they're all gone. you will not want to miss it, i promise you. okay, so in this episode with Ceschi, i talk to him about all sorts of stuff: his new music. his philosophy about songwriting and performing live. the Fake Four artists and label. and which song off of his last album was recorded in one take. www.fakefour.bandcamp.com/ www.fakefour.bandcamp.com/album/sans-soleil https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kOckHR5PbU&ab_channel=SansSerifRec. www.ctverses.com

#025: An Historic and the Magical Multitudinous Music of Adam Matlock
Saturday Sep 26, 2020
Saturday Sep 26, 2020
this episode, i sit with Adam Matlock, the musician and songwriter behind An Historic, Mystal Tree, Kolessa, AOS, and more. We'll get into all that, but what we're really here to talk about is An Historic's new album 'Thawing', which came out earlier this year. Adam has a unique style that makes his music impossible to neatly categorize, so I'm going to call it "Matlockian". In our interview, we talk about the new An Historic record, his other projects, why accordion is his primary instrument, and what Renaissance composer Carlo Gesualdo and Missy Elliot have in common. www.adammatlock.bandcamp.com http://anhistoricmusic.blogspot.com www.ctverses.com

this episode, i talk with the singer, songwriter, musician, engineer, producer, and all around swell guy Noah Silvestry, who records under the name Luke Ellingson. this episode of the pod will be a little bit different because it's actually two episodes in one! i sat with Noah back in late June to record a podcast about his upcoming record, Like Wires Humming that was scheduled to come out in mid-July. Noah decided to push the record back -- for reasons that we will talk about early in this interview -- so we decided to keep that interview on hold. then last week, we got together to talk about the new Funnybone Records compilation, Room for You. It is out now, and you can (and should) order it from bandcamp and then also stream it on spotify. the compilation is 24 tracks, featuring artists like Lady Lamb, Bebe Machete, Pearl Sugar, Namesake, Mal Devisa, Niamh, Chad Browne Springer, Laura Wolf, Kayana from Jelani Sei, and Crag Mask. oh, and it features a really awesome collaboration between Luke Ellingson and friend-of-the-pod Daniprobably (it's the opening song of this episode). the compilation's goal is to raise $5000 for three nonprofit organizations, so if you can pitch in, please do. https://funnybonerecords.bandcamp.com/album/room-for-you https://lukeellingson.bandcamp.com/ https://ctverses.com

Friday Sep 11, 2020
Friday Sep 11, 2020
we talk with Quinn from the band Quinn! their debut EP 'Depression Nap' just came out, so we talk a lot about it and why Quinn is a band and not just a solo project. other topics for discussion: the ecstasy of sushi from Middletown, an upcoming socially-distance release show, and 5 records that everyone NEEDS to hear. stay until the end for a lightning round pop quiz -- will Quinn pass the test??? https://www.qquinn.com https://qquinn.bandcamp.com https://www.ctverses.com

#022: Jenny Genius introspective and upbeat indie rock
Thursday Aug 13, 2020
Thursday Aug 13, 2020
photo credit: kelly sullivan iin this episode of our podcast, we interviewed Jenny Genius(!), the New Haven band featuring Maggie and Dan Katz (from Spit-Take / NG2BC) and Chris Chew (from his Chew solo work and formerly drums in Honeycutt). they just released a brand new tape (self-titled), so i was super excited to pick their brains about their songwriting process, their knack for the less-than-two-minute tune, and Rivers Cuomo's social studies teacher. and because Maggie and Dan also co-run the venue NG2BC (with Joe), you know i had to ask them about that too. you can find Jenny Genius's music on bandcamp, and if you order their tape, all proceeds go to New Haven's Citywide Youth Coalition. but -- and here's the catch -- there are only 50 copies, so you should order now instead of waiting! intro and outro songs: "bumps & bones" and "oak" by jenny genius jennygenius.bandcamp.com ctverses.com

#021: Zebvlon's intuitively layered shoegaze pop
Friday May 29, 2020
Friday May 29, 2020
welcome to another ctverses audio interview. this episode, i interviewed zeb mrowka and shelby talbot from the band zebvlon! a few weeks ago, our website premiere their brand new EP, oil's dry, and the song you heard in the intro -- "Will 2 Live" -- is taken from that EP. Zeb and Shelby both have very interesting points of view and great senses of humor, so this episode was a lot of fun. I got a chance to ask them about their music, the agony and ecstasy of weezer, what they would do as president, and christian shoegaze bands. okay, here's my interview with zebvlon. You can find their music on bandcamp and spotify, and if you want to hear that holy grail zebvlon track -- the one they made with some rando from fiverr [listen to the episode to see what I mean!], message them directly. And if you get a chance, also check out their drummer Jake's new EP, recorded under the name 'Blue Park Suites' -- that record came out this year, and we mentioned it a little in this interview, but I really adore it, too. www.zebvlon.bandcamp.com www.ctverses.com
